Raster images, such as JPEG or TIFF, can only be attached to an AutoCAD drawing similarly to an external reference (Xref). They cannot be bound in a drawing.
[data capture] Data produced by scanning a surface with an optical or electronic device. Common examples include scanned documents, remotely sensed data (for example, satellite images), and aerial photographs.
Type xref and then press Enter. On the status bar, click Manage Xrefs, which displays when external references are linked to the drawing. 2 Select the external reference to bind. 3 Click Bind.
To embed the drawing, right click on the image file, choose Open with MS Paint or similar application. Within the graphics application select the entire image (CTRL+A) and copy to clipboard (Ctrl+C). Switch to AutoCAD and paste the image (Ctrl+V) into the AutoCAD drawing.

In AutoCAD use Paste Special (PASTESPEC command, or pick it from the Edit menu) and select Picture (Metafile). This creates a static, embedded OLE object that becomes part of the drawing file (rather than an xref). You can resize it with grips or Properties. Very useful info.
