As a rule of thumb, we recommend that you use a 15mm margin on all edges except for the binding edge. The biding edge will require a slightly wider margin to leave space for the binding when printing your book. This prevents images and text from being lost in the fold when you open the book.
To help avoid this, we recommend you have a 3/8 (0.375) margin on the binding side of all pages, including inside cover pages. Smaller books may need less margin while larger books may need more. For example, if you are designing a perfect bound book, then your margins should look similar to the graphic below.
A binding margin is the vertical space without any text, on each page, used for stitching, drilling or whatever method is used to hold the pages together. The binding margin is measured in characters or braille cells on an embosser, or in inches or millimeters on a printer.
In general, for spiral or wire-o bound products we recommend 1/2 margins to be safe. However, if space is an issue, you can follow these specific guides: Holes for spiral binding are smaller and only require 1/4 of the binding edge. Wire-o holes are larger and require 1/2 margins.
The inside edge margin sizes differ depending on your binding type: Paperback Book Printing: 18mm on the binding edge. 15mm on the other edges. Hardback Book Printing: 19mm on the top and bottom edge, 18mm for the binding edge and 15mm for the outside edge.
Use 1-inch margins on every side of the page for an APA Style paper. However, if you are writing a dissertation or thesis, your advisor or institution may specify different margins (e.g., a 1.5-inch left margin to accommodate binding).
Left hand margin (binding edge) requirement: When designing a soft bound book, please ensure that all important content and text is kept a minimum of 12mm from the bound edge of each page. This would be the left hand side for right hand pages and the right hand side for left hand pages.
Margins are very important when it comes to binding. No margins = Text/images cut off in the binding process. For single-sided printing, we recommend a margin of 3cm on the left side and 2.5 cm on the other three sides. For double-sided printing, we recommend a margin of 2.5 cm on all four sides.
