Dont ever use bandages or duct tape to bind your chest. Thats because they dont provide any give when you move around. This can cause muscle, rib, spine, and lung damage. To avoid these problems, stick with your safe binders.
Always bind for less than 8 hours a day (the more breaks and time you can go without, the better!). Binding for long hours every day over time breaks down tissue and can cause breathing problems, back pain, and skin irritation. Never use duct tape or Ace bandages to bind your chest.
Always use a chest binder or compression garment specifically intended for flattening your chest safely. Always bind for less than 8 hours a day. The more breaks and time you can go without wearing your binder, the better! Take it off before you sleep or before you exercise to give your body a rest.
The most popular safe methods are to use commercial binders, sports bras, strategic layering, and bandages or elastic materials. If youre binding frequently, make sure to take breaks throughout the day and take days off, as binding continuously can cause negative side effects (2,4).
Try a Compression Top A new, safer alternative to chest binding is the use of a compression top. Compression tops are built from gentler fabrics than most other binders on the market right now.
Different Binding Methods Bandages. Our first tip: dont bind with bandages. Layering shirts. This can be super useful if youve already bound your chest and you still have some visible chest tissue, or if you dont own anything to bind with. Sports bra method. Neoprene. Sports compression wear. Professional binders.
Compression sports bras can be a good alternative to binding, particularly if you are looking to do exercise. I try not to bind when Im at home. One thing that helps with that is wearing pyjamas a lot - for some reason I find it easier to not bind when Im at home if Im wearing a pyjama top than a t-shirt!
Other tips for safe and effective binding include: Always remove your binding before you sleep. Do not wear binding while exercising. Remove binding before showering. Never wear binding for more than eight hours at a time. Take days off from wearing binding when possible. Never layer commercial binders.
