The intentional binding effect refers to the subjective compression of the temporal interval between a voluntary action and its external sensory consequence.
1.2 The binding problem The idea was subsequently applied to visual perception as a model solution to the binding problem. The binding problem considers that features of an object need to be bound together by some neuronal mechanism across a population of neurons, so that the object can be perceived as a whole.

Temporal binding refers to a phenomenon whereby the time interval between a cause and its effect is perceived as shorter than the same interval separating two unrelated events.
For example, when humans view a scene containing a red circle and a green square, some neurons signal the presence of red, others signal the presence of green, still others the circle shape and square shape. Here, the binding problem is the issue of how the brain represents the pairing of color and shape.
In its most general form, The Binding Problem concerns how items that are encoded by distinct brain circuits can be combined for perception, decision, and action.
The binding hypothesis proposes that working memory capacity is limited by the number and strength of bindings a person can form and maintain in WM. The binding hypothesis distinguishes between two types of bindings.
