The cross-correlation function (CCF) identifies lags or leads of the two time-series. The CCF is defined as the set of correlations between xt+h and yt for h=0, ±1, ±2, ±3, and so on. A negative value for h is a correlation between the x-variable at a time before t and the y-variable at time t.
It is used to compare multiple time series and objectively determine how well they match up with each other and, in particular, at what point the best match occurs. Cross-correlation may also reveal any periodicities in the data.
A negative correlation describes the extent to which two variables move in opposite directions. For example, for two variables, X and Y, an increase in X is associated with a decrease in Y. A negative correlation coefficient is also referred to as an inverse correlation.
The magnitude of the correlation coefficient indicates the strength of the association. For example, a correlation of r = 0.9 suggests a strong, positive association between two variables, whereas a correlation of r = -0.2 suggest a weak, negative association.
How Do You Calculate the Correlation Coefficient? The correlation coefficient is calculated by determining the covariance of the variables and dividing that number by the product of those variables' standard deviations.
Cross-correlation between {Xi } and {Xj } is defined by the ratio of covariance to root-mean variance, ρ i , j = γ i , j σ i 2 σ j 2 . γ ^ i , j = 1 N ∑ t = 1 N [ ( X i t − X ¯ i ) ( X j t − X ¯ j ) ] .
If X, Y are two random variables of zero mean, then the covariance Cov[XY ] = E[X · Y ] is the dot product of X and Y . The standard deviation of X is the length of X. The correlation is the cosine of the angle between the two vectors.
The main benefits of correlation analysis are that it helps companies determine which variables they want to investigate further, and it allows for rapid hypothesis testing. The main type of correlation analysis use Pearson's r formula to identify the degree of the linear relationship between two variables.
The cross-correlation between two different signals or functions or waveforms is defined as the measure of similarity or coherence between one signal and the time-delayed version of another signal.
Cross-Correlation It is calculated simply by multiplying and summing two-time series together. In the following example, graphs A and B are cross-correlated but graph C is not correlated to either. Using the cross-correlation formula above we can calculate the level of correlation between series.
