They aren't waterproof, so give it plenty of time to dry out. Wearing a wet binder can lead to skin irritation....If your binder is too small or too tight, it can: Restrict breathing. Irritate your skin. Break skin around the edges of the binder. Cause overheating. Bruise or fracture your ribs.
The most popular safe methods are to use commercial binders, sports bras, strategic layering, and bandages or elastic materials. If you're binding frequently, make sure to take breaks throughout the day and take days off, as binding continuously can cause negative side effects (2,4).
Binding helps a person feel more comfortable in their body by creating the appearance of a flatter chest. This can be a good option for people who aren't able to get (or don't want) top surgery but want to alleviate feelings of gender dysphoria.
Binding using ace bandages, duct tape, or plastic wrap can be dangerous and harmful to your body. These materials are meant to constrict and constrain, which can restrict both movement and breathing or even cut into your skin and break ribs.
It is known to puncture lungs, break ribs and restrict breathing. Binders have a time limit of 8 hours max of "safe" wear-ability.
Both Binders and TransTape are safe if used properly. Binders should only be worn for 8 hours maximum, shouldn't get wet or slept in, also shouldn't be exercised in, and cleaned properly. TransTape is actually safer than a binder. You can wear TransTape for up to 5 days, you can get it wet and sleep in it.
Binding can affect skin, muscles, and movement, particularly over long periods of time. Tightly covering the skin and chest with materials that don't allow free-flowing air can create warm, moist environments for bacterial and fungal infections to develop.
Over time, continued breast binding can make breast tissue elongated and more malleable, actually making compression easier. However, studies indicated that people who bound their breasts more frequently were more likely to report negative health effects.
Because TransTape doesn't use compression, it doesn't have an impact on your ribcage, lungs, or other internal organs like a compression binder does. It only interacts with your skin, which means short-term and long-term use will only impact your skin.
