Typically medication allergic reactions develop after multiple doses of the medication. If you notice your pet has scratching or itching, facial swelling or hives, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.
If your pet misses a dose, its fine to give him or her the medication as soon as you realize its needed, as long as its only been a few hours since the antibiotic should have been taken. If its almost time for the next pill, dont give your pet the missed dose. Instead, provide the next dose at the scheduled time.
Dogs can smell the medication. Place the medication in a small amount of wet food, if they like it. Use a bit of peanut butter or cream cheese to disguise the pill. Plain yogurt is another good food that can mask medication. A piece of cheese, hot dog or liverwurst can conceal the pill.
Symptoms of drug toxicity in dogs include GI upset (diarrhea, vomiting), fever, dehydration, lethargy, pale or dark gums, seizures, rapid heartbeat or signs of pain.
Theres an increased risk of side effects if you take 2 doses closer together than recommended. Accidentally taking 1 extra dose of your antibiotic is unlikely to cause you any serious harm. But it will increase your chances of getting side effects, such as pain in your stomach, diarrhoea, and feeling or being sick.
Its important to make sure you take your antibiotics at regularly scheduled doses for example, every 8 hours or every 12 hours. This is so the medicines effect spreads out evenly over the course of a day. Make sure to ask your medical provider if you should take your medication with food or on an empty stomach.
Even if your pet feels or looks better after a few days of the course, the bacterial infection may not have resolved completely. Stopping a course of antibiotics early risks bacteria failing to be eliminated from your pet and may result in a return of the illness. Acceleration of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).
Important tips. Below are some important points to remember if your pet has been prescribed antibiotics: Give the correct amount - As directed by your vet. Give at the correct time - If medication is to be given twice daily, give it as close to 12-hour intervals as you can, not at breakfast and tea time.
