Iamp;#39;m going to replace the background behind this camellia flower that I photographed on white paper now my new background will be this sand layer that I positioned above the camellia now Iamp;#39;m going to make a selection of the flower Iamp;#39;ve saved one earlier so Iamp;#39;ll just go to my select menu and choose load selection and Iamp;#39;ve called it the flower okay now Iamp;#39;m going to invert the selection select inverse so I only have the background selected and then with the new layer selected Iamp;#39;m going to add a layer mask now you can see that thereamp;#39;s no shadow at the moment but this will be picked up by the use of the blend mode and I can only do this because Iamp;#39;ve been photographing on white so Iamp;#39;ll choose the multiply blend mode and there is my very sophisticated shadow that was accessed via the multiply blend mode

What is the role of shadows?

Humans constantly, but unconsciously, use shadows to judge the shape of objects in their environment. Because shadows reveal much about an objects extension in space, they are often used to heighten the illusion of depth in a painting.

Why is the shadows important?

Without shadows, we cannot tell the position of an object in a space because shadows influence the perception of the audience in 3D visualisations. From a viewers perspective, shadows help determine the relative position of the object and its size in a scene.

Why are shadows important in science?

We begin the study of light with shadows, because they are easily observed and lend themselves well to prediction, measurement and data analysis. They have a behavior that is not entirely simple but which can be completely understood knowing that light travels in a straight line.

How can you change the position of your shadow?

When the light source is directly above the object, the shadow will be directly underneath. When the light source is to one side of the object, the shadow will appear on the opposite side. The shadow will also be longer.
