As the mixture is leaned and we move to the right, all tracked parameters increase and peak, but at different points. For example, the most HP is available at around 100 degrees (F) rich of peak EGT (ROP). (For economy, many airframe manufacturers recommend running the engine in this range, usually 50-75 degrees ROP.)
What equipment does your engine need to run safely lean of peak? It must be fuel injected (not carbureted), preferably with matched-flow nozzles such as GAMI injectors, and it should have a graphical engine monitor with cylinder head temperature (CHT) and exhaust gas temperature (EGT) probes on every cylinder.
During normal operation of such vehicles, EGTs usually stay within safe limits, but situations can occur where the EGT gets too high, doing serious engine damage without any warning to the driver. A pyrometer that displays a diesels EGT can warn the driver of dangerous conditions before such damage occurs.
Mixture settings that are rich of peak EGT provide more power. The airplane flies faster, but the engine burns more fuel and cylinder head temperatures run hotter. Lean of peak EGT settings run cooler, in large part because the engine is developing less power.
When you decide to start leaning the engine, pull the mixture back slowly. As the EGT temperature climbs, it will eventually slow down. Finally, the temperature will peak (docHub the hottest temperature) and start dropping again. Watch for the temperature to start dropping.
What causes high EGTs? In simple terms, high EGTs are a result of a rich running condition in your diesel engine. This means that the engine is burning too much fuel relative to the amount of air it is getting. You may notice the effects of this as black smoke coming from your tailpipe.
What do Lean of Peak (LoP) operations entail? The answer is simple. We normally operate our engines with the fuel flows on the rich side of peak exhaust gas temperature (EGT). We lean the fuel flows to peak EGT and then enrichen a certain number of degrees (normally 50F on the rich side).
