The maximum ink coverage is generally 300 %. Dont forget to take the paper type into account here too. With coated paper, for example, we recommend not exceeding 280%.
Ensure you have your file open. Click on the Window drop down menu. Select Output, then Separations Preview. Under the drop-down for View in the Separations Preview pane, select Ink Limit to view the ink weight for each colour, as well as the total ink weight.
Step 1 Open the image in Illustrator or InDesign and select the text or object. Step 2 Move the sliders in the color palette, for each color, to change the values so that the total equals 280% or less. Ink Limit set at 280%. Areas on the art that are above 280% will appear in red.
Open your PDF in Acrobat. Then go to Tools Print Production Output Preview. In the dialogue box below (under Total Area Coverage) enter the recommended Maximum Ink Limit for the paper stock you reqire (225% for Uncoated stocks such as Letterheads and 300% for Coated stocks such as Gloss Leaflets).
A simple way to fix this is in Photoshop, to choose Edit Color Settings. Click on CMYK in working spaces, choose custom CMYK then reduce your total ink limit to 250, choose ok, then ok again. Now convert to cmyk by clicking Image Mode CMYK. Your ink saturation is now at or below 250%.
Checking Ink Density Values in inDesign In InDesign, check total ink in the Separations Preview panel (Window Output Separations Preview). Set the View menu in the panel to Ink Limit and adjust the total percentage to your specific output requirements.
