USDOT numbers are not transferable. This means that if a merger or acquisition creates a new legal entity, a new USDOT number will be required as well. It also means that the new entity will be subject to a new entrant compliance process.
Online: You can update your USDOT number company information on the Licensing and Insurance (LI) web site by filing an MCS-150 (Motor Carrier Identification Report). To update online, you will need a Personal Identification Number (PIN). You can apply for your PIN online.
Transferring your MC starts with notifying the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) about the change in ownership. This step is crucial as it ensures that the new owner can legally operate under your MC number and that you are no longer responsible for the authority.
How do I update my intrastate or interstate DOT number? To update your number, visit the FMCSA identification report site. You need to update your interstate and intrastate DOT numbers every 24 months, or immediately if there are any changes. Please refer to FMCSA updates site for detailed instruction.
You can determine the status of your USDOT number in these ways: Online: Go to the SAFER website and search by name, USDOT number or MC number. Submit a ticket: Visit our website at: ask.fmcsa.dot.gov. Chat: Initiate a live chat with FMCSA Customer Service. Phone: Call 800-832-5660 to speak to FMCSA Customer Service.
