To create a release, use the gh release create subcommand. Replace tag with the desired tag for the release. gh release create TAG. Follow the interactive prompts. Alternatively, you can specify arguments to skip these prompts. For more information about possible arguments, see the GitHub CLI manual.
Create a tag To create a lightweight tag, run the command git tag TAGNAME , changing TAGNAME to your desired tag name. To create an annotated tag, run one of the versions of git tag from the command line: Push your tags upstream with git push origin --tags .
Git uses two main types of tags: lightweight and annotated. A lightweight tag is very much like a branch that doesnt change its just a pointer to a specific commit. Annotated tags, however, are stored as full objects in the Git database.
Tag objects (created with -a , -s , or -u ) are called annotated tags; they contain a creation date, the tagger name and e-mail, a tagging message, and an optional GnuPG signature. Whereas a lightweight tag is simply a name for an object (usually a commit object).
Annotation Type Tag @Tag is a repeatable annotation that is used to declare a tag for the annotated test class or test method. Tags are used to filter which tests are executed for a given test plan. For example, a development team may tag tests with values such as fast , slow , ci-server , etc.
Releases are deployable software iterations you can package and make available for a wider audience to download and use. Releases are based on Git tags, which mark a specific point in your repositorys history. A tag date may be different than a release date since they can be created at different times.
You can push a single tag or all tags to a remote repository using the git push command with the name of the remote and the name of the tag, or the --tags option to push all tags at once.
Annotated tags store extra meta data such as: the tagger name, email, and date. This is important data for a public release. Lightweight tags are essentially bookmarks to a commit, they are just a name and a pointer to a commit, useful for creating quick links to relevant commits.
