If you are resigning with immediate effect in protest at how you have been treated, a verbal resignation is enough, but it is better to put it in writing. Most employment contracts will require you to resign in writing – so, your notice period will not start to run until you give your employer written notice.
As long as the reason is not illegal (i.e., based on a protected class or action), it is typically legal. However, some employment contracts come with protections that prevent employers from firing their employees after giving notice.
So we spoke to HR experts about quitting jobs via email—and whether it's okay to do so. In short... yes! In most cases, it is absolutely fine to hand in one's notice via email.
Just as when resigning in person, your resignation letter is best kept brief and professional – so avoid a handwritten letter if you can. As discussed in the How to hand in your notice section above, it's best to hand over a typed letter in person, but if this is impossible you can send it via email.
The written resignation etiquette Your written notice should be short, polite and to the point. Confirm your intention to leave, refer to the date of your discussion with your manager and the day you intend to finish work. You do not have to detail why you are leaving or where you are going.
A resignation letter includes notice that you're resigning, your end date of employment, and your contact information. You can include additional details, but they are not required. Resignation letters can be submitted in print or sent by email.
Give the letter one final proofread and once you're absolutely positive, send it off to your supervisor. For a more formal approach, you can also make your resignation handwritten, and give it to your supervisor personally.
A resignation can be either verbal or in writing, and is a clear statement by you to your employer that you are going to leave your job. Threatening to leave, or saying that you are looking for another job, isn't the same as formally resigning.
A good resignation letter should include the following at a minimum. Current Date. Company name, and address. Statement of resignation. State what your last day will be. A two weeks notice period. Your job title. Your appreciation for the opportunity. An offer of help during the transition period.
Remember: In order to be legally binding, your resignation must be handwritten and bear your signature. Furthermore, the name and address of the employer, as well as the date of your resignation, must be included in your letter. It's also important to indicate a concrete date when the resignation should be effective.
