Important: This option is available if you chose Always visible in your Phone app settings. Open your devices Phone app . Pick who to call: To enter a number, tap Dialpad . Tap RTT . After the other person answers, enter a message in the text field. When youre done with the call, tap End call .
RTT (real-time text) allows you to send text messages with a recipient during a phone call. RTT can also be used with a TTY (teletypewriter) device. This feature is available for plans from carriers in the United States and Canada only. Standard voice call rates apply for both Software and Hardware RTT/TTY calls.
Recipients can read the message while it is being written, without waiting, and no additional device is needed to use RTT. When RTT is enabled on both devices, no audio is heard on the call. If you arent hearing audio on a call, make sure RTT is turned off.
To disable RTT mode, open the Phone app and tap the three dots in the top right corner. Tap Settings, then tap Calls. Tap RTT, then tap the RTT switch to turn it off.
If you have hearing or speech difficulties, you can communicate by telephone using Teletype (TTY) or real-time text (RTT)protocols that transmit text as you type and allow the recipient to read the message right away. RTT is a more advanced protocol that transmits audio as you type text.
Real-time text (RTT) lets you use text to communicate during a phone call. RTT works with TTY and doesnt require any additional accessories. Important: The information in this article might not apply to all devices. To find out if you can use RTT with your device and service plan, check with your carrier.
Set up RTT/TTY Go to Settings Accessibility RTT/TTY. Turn on Software RTT/TTY or Hardware TTY. Tap Relay Number and enter a phone number for RTT/TTY relay calls. RTT/TTY sends characters immediately as you type them.
Heres how to turn off RTT on an iPhone: Open Settings. Scroll down, and tap Accessibility. Scroll down, and tap RTT/TTY. Tap the Software RTT/TTY toggle to disable it. If necessary, tap the Hardware TTY toggle to disable it as well. RTT and TTY are now disabled on your iPhone.
RTT is a more advanced protocol that transmits audio as you type text. iPhone provides built-in Software RTT and TTY from the Phone appit requires no additional devices. If you turn on Software RTT/TTY, iPhone defaults to the RTT protocol whenever its supported by the carrier.
