A boundary line may be shown in broken lines if it is not intended to form part of the claimed design. Applicant may choose to define the bounds of a claimed design with broken lines when the boundary does not exist in reality in the article embodying the design.
The use of dashed lines, or broken lines, in design patent drawings means that whatever is drawn in such lines is not claimed. In a US design patent, the claimed design comprises what is drawn in solid lines.
The manual clarifies that the dotted lines indicate those portions which are not part of claimed design and the features for which protection is sought must be shown in solid lines.
Hidden Lines: Hidden lines are seen in Utility patents more often than others. They are used when a line is obstructed by another part, device, or embodiment and that line needs to be disclosed for patent filing purposes. This line type will appear as dashed.
If these lines are discontinuous (made of dots) they generally indicate an indirect, weaker or looser relationship. In engineering drawings, dotted lines are used to represent hidden or phantom lines. They indicate parts of an object that are not visible in the view being represented.
Patency means the line is open and not blocked (like a patent airway)!
The dashed or dotted line is known to diminish the boundary strength of an object, reducing its salience, which is one reason we interpret it as lesser than an object with a solid line. When you see a speech bubble outlined with a dashed line, you might interpret it as a whisper or an off-stage comment.
