Its time to let Microsoft Word do its magic! Place the cursor where you want the table of contents to appear in the document. Navigate to the REFERENCES tab in the Ribbon. Click the Table of Contents button in the Table of Contents group. Choose one of the Automatic table of content styles listed.
To have a header style show up in the navigation pane, you need to make sure that the style is marked as Outline Level 1. This is because the navigation pane uses the outline levels to mark content.
To show the Navigation pane in Word, click the View tab in the Ribbon. For all document views other than Read Mode, then check the Navigation Pane checkbox in the Show button group. If using Read Mode, then select the Navigation Pane choice from the View tabs drop-down menu, instead.
Browse by headings The Navigation pane doesnt display headings that are in tables, text boxes, or headers or footers. In the Navigation pane, click the Headings tab. To go to a heading in your document, click that heading in the Navigation pane.
