- [Narrator] Kinesiology is the study of human movement. Our kiKNEEsio Adaptive Brace supports the knee after anterior cruciate ligament surgery in order to keep you moving. So brace yourselves for the next step in ACL rehabilitation technology. 200,000 people tear their ACLs every year in the United States alone, most of which affect the younger, active population between the ages of 15 and 24. These can occur anywhere from a professional sports arena to your neighborhood gymnasium. This is a problem because the ACL is the most important ligament in the knee and provides 90% of joint stability. Recovery from this injury is long, strenuous and usually requires the use of a knee brace for added support while the knee heals. The US orthopedic bracing market is valued at over $1.1 billion dollars and is expected to grow 4.9% through the year 2018 due due to an increase in fitness and youth athletic activities. After a complete ACL tear, some patients are unable to participate in cutting- or pivoting-type sports, while others have instability during even normal activities, such as walking. There are some rare individuals who can participate in sports without any symptoms of instability.
Dont work your quadriceps early on because this can stretch the ACL graft. Stationery bike riding or lightweight leg presses are recommended during the first three months after surgery. These exercises strengthen the quadriceps while using the hamstrings to protect the ACL graft. Dont swim or run for five months.
Most people can get back to desk work or sedentary activity one or two weeks after surgery. If the right knee has been reconstructed, it may be several weeks before the knee is strong enough to drive safely. For heavy work, it may take 3-6 months before the patient is medically cleared to return with no restrictions.
ACL recovery rehab may include strengthening exercises for ones leg, hip/pelvis, and core region, as well as correcting training errors through proprioceptive and plyometric exercises for pivoting, jumping, and landing (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2019).
ACL Rehabilitation Protocol Get the knee straight early (within the first 2-3 weeks), and keep it straight. Flexion can progress gradually. Use knee pain and knee swelling as a guide. If either or both are increasing, the knee isnt tolerating what youre doing to it.
Reconstruction. This protocol is intended to guide clinicians through the post-operative course for ACL Reconstruction. This protocol is time based (dependent on tissue healing) as well as criterion based.
What NOT to do after ACL surgery Do not put too much pressure on your knee and body. Dont over ice your knee. Avoid sleeping with your knee bent. Do not overcompensate your recovering knee. Do not be afraid to tell your doctor if you are worried about something.

Safest ACL Rehab Exercises to Start Start by sitting on the floor with your legs outstretched. Slowly bend the injured knee while sliding your heel across the floor toward you. Slowly slide the foot back into the starting position. Repeat 10 times.
