When interjections are used at the beginning or in the middle of a sentence, we put a comma after them.
Commas (Eight Basic Uses) Use a comma to separate independent clauses. Use a comma after an introductory clause or phrase. Use a comma between all items in a series. Use commas to set off nonrestrictive clauses. Use a comma to set off appositives. Use a comma to indicate direct address. Use commas to set off direct quotations.
Hello, comma, my old friend. When it comes to greetings and commas, there is one general rule that you should follow: place the comma after the greeting but before a persons name. Regardless of what your greeting is, this rule will usually guide you to success.
Bracketing commas are used to mark additional information in a sentence. For example: These studies, in spite of their shared focus on locality, approach the topic from contrasting perspectives. You can check you have used these commas correctly by removing the bracketed section from the sentence.
For standalone interjections, an exclamation point is often appropriate. If youre working an interjection into a longer sentence, it should probably be preceded and/or followed by a comma.
Per CMOS 6.35, A comma usually follows an exclamatory oh or ah unless it is followed by an exclamation mark (or a dash) or forms part of a phrase (e.g., oh boy, ah yes).
Use commas after introductory a) clauses, b) phrases, or c) words that come before the main clause. Example: In the beginning, there was light. Use a pair of commas in the middle of a sentence to set off clauses, phrases, and words that are not essential to the meaning of the sentence.
The comma is not usually used when writing either expression. When speaking you can of course insert any pause or use any intonation you want.
