PAP is a legacy protocol that cannot be considered secure because it transmits plaintext ASCII passwords and has no cryptographic protection. The only way to ensure the security of PAP is to ensure that the endpoints established a secure tunnel (using IPSec, for instance).
Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) is a data link layer protocol that uses authentication methods to identify and validate remote devices. PPP sessions use two authentication methods: Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP)
Password Authentication Protocol, or PAP, and Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol, or CHAP, are both used to authenticate PPP sessions and can be used with many VPNs.
Setting Up PAP Authentication (Task Maps) Gather preconfiguration information. Collect user names and other data that is needed for authentication. Update the password database, if necessary. Ensure that all potential callers are in the servers password database. Create the PAP database. Modify the PPP configuration files.
Here are just a few authentication methods. Single-Factor / Primary Authentication. Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Single Sign-On (SSO) Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP)
The PPP authentication protocols are Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) and Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP). Each protocol uses a secrets database that contains identification information, or security credentials, for each caller that is permitted to link to the local machine.
An attacker can see the users name, password, and any other information associated with the PPP session. Some additional security can be gained on the PPP link by using CHAP or EAP.
The Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) provides a simple method for the peer to establish its identity using a two-way handshake. After the link is established, an ID and password pair is repeatedly sent by the peer to the authenticator until authentication is acknowledged or the connection is terminated.
