An electronic navigational chart (ENC) is an official database created by a national hydrographic office for use with an Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS).
Types of ECDIS charts Raster Chart (RNC): RNCs are a direct copy or a scan of the paper charts. It looks identical to a paper chart as all the information shown is directly printed. Vector Chart (ENC): ENCs are computer-generated charts.
The scale of a chart is its so-called natural scale, an expression of the relationship between a given distance on the chart to the actual distance it represents on the earths surface.

Raster Chart (RNC): RNCs are a direct copy or a scan of the paper charts. It looks identical to a paper chart as all the information shown is directly printed. Unlike paper charts which are only purchased once, until a new edition is published or a chart is cancelled, electronic charts are purchased through a license system called permits. Permits are used to control the permission to use a chart. They prevent unofficial copying and distribution.
An ECDIS functions as the hardware, while an ENC contains the dataset of relevant information for a voyage. Together, these two components create a powerful digital navigation solution. However, they bring much more to the table than eliminating paper waste and storage via basic digitization.
Many Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) charts are available in digital form as either a Raster Navigational Chart (RNC) or as a vector Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC). Both charts use navigation software to provide navigators with an electronic alternative to paper charts, resulting in safer navigation.
Unlike an ECDIS operating in ENC mode, RNC mode operation allows for limited alarm and warning functionality. There is a finite amount of resolution because images are digitally scanned. Vector charts may show more dense information when used to zoom in. Raster charts are limited in their functionality in this regard.
