Having a negative PTO balance means that an employee takes paid time off before they have accrued it. In other words, the employer is advancing or loaning their employee the salary to cover the paid time off they take ahead of earning it.
There are two typical ways an employee can pay back their negative PTO balance. The first is to keep working for the employer until they accrue enough PTO to cover what theyve used. The second is to allow an employer to deduct amounts from their paycheck until the negative balance is paid back.
