Most people who tear their ACL feel pain and a pop in their knee when the injury happens. Their knee usually gets swollen soon after the injury. After the swelling goes down, someone with an ACL tear usually can walk. But the knee may feel unstable and can give way and make the person stumble or fall.
With a cadaver procedure, one in five athletes will need to have it done again. With an autograft, one in 20 athletes will have to endure another surgery. Stated differently, an athlete with an allograft has a four times greater chance of having to go through it again.
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the two cruciate ligaments which stabilizes the knee joint by preventing excessive forward movements of the tibia or limiting rotational knee movements.
Most commonly, patients need around 9-12 months to return to full sports participation, with some returning sooner and others later. Return to sports activities takes time.
Graft Insertion A guide wire is inserted through the tibia and femur to help accurately drill tunnels. A surgical drill is inserted over the guide wire and a new tunnel in the femur and tibia is created for your new ACL Graft. The end of the graft is tied to a loop on the guide wire and the graft is pulled into place.
Abstract: Failure rates among primary Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction (ACLR) range from 3.2% to 11.1%.

After surgery, recovery time usually takes a minimum of 9 months. This includes the initial healing phases postsurgery and physical therapy. Its very important to wait until your ACL reconstruction has healed completely before returning to sports in order to prevent reinjury.
